Volunteering at CRMC!
I was fortunate enough to experience two very different and exciting experiences with my internship. During the fall and winter sports seasons, I was able to shadow and assist the athletic trainer at my high school, Mr. Cole Edwards. During my internship with Mr. Edwards, I learned how to tape wrists and ankles. I also helped care for the athletes and utilized my skills by assisting Mr. Edwards in tape jobs and examinations. I typically helped at football games, but I also helped out at volleyball games. I specifically remember one injury that occurred during a football game. A defensive player from our team got hit and went down really hard. He had to be laid down on the field perfectly still due to possible neck, back, or head injuries. Everyone was really panicked except for our athletic trainer, Mr. Edwards. He moved very urgently, but he moved calmly. It was truly amazing that he could remain so calm due to the circumstances.
I also got the opportunity to shadow a surgical RN at the Community Regional Medical Center. I was able to help turn over beds, transport surgical tools to and from operating rooms, and witness a surgery. The first surgery I ever witnessed was a whipple. It was incredible to be able to watch the surgeons work together to save someone’s life. These experiences have led me to look more closely into the options of surgical RN and surgeon. |
